Vivienne Westwood Africa
Vivienne Westwood Africa began in 2010 when the grand dame of fashion teamed up with the International Trade Centre’s Ethical Fashion Initiative (EFI) to create a unique collection of bags handmade in Kenya. Local artisans (mainly women) from marginalised communities put each colourful piece together using special embroidery and appliqué techniques. The project has enabled those communities to acquire transferable skills and better salaries – and by 2015 it had allowed more than 950 children to be put through school. The pieces are designed to blend in effortlessly with the main Westwood ‘look’ and have been featured in the Gold Label, Red Label and MAN catwalk shows.
